Carotid Duplex Ultrasound

A Carotid Artery Test, also known as an Artery Scan or Carotid Ultrasound, is a diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound technology to examine the carotid arteries in the neck. The primary purpose of this test is to assess the presence of plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, which can be a significant risk factor for stroke, cardiovascular disease, and aneurysms. Here's an overview of this test:

Purpose:

  • The Carotid Artery Test is performed to assess an individual's risk for developing chronic conditions, especially before symptoms become apparent, enabling early intervention.
  • Plaque buildup in the carotid arteries is a key focus of this test, as it can contribute to the development of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and aneurysms.
  • The primary goal is to screen for the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, providing peace of mind or early detection of potential issues.

Preparation:

  • Typically, no specific preparation is required for this test. Unlike some medical tests, such as fasting before a blood test, individuals undergoing a Carotid Artery Test do not need to follow any special dietary or fasting guidelines.

Procedure:

  • During the Carotid Artery Test, you will lie on an examination table, and the ultrasound technician will assist in positioning you comfortably.
  • To provide better access and a clearer view of the carotid arteries, a pillow or pad may be placed under the back of your neck, tilting your head backward. While this position may feel a bit uncomfortable, it is generally not painful. In some cases, you might have the option to sit upright during the ultrasound.
  • The ultrasound technician will apply a gel to the skin over the carotid artery. This gel serves as a medium through which the ultrasound probe, or transducer, can smoothly glide over the skin's surface. The initial sensation of the gel may be slightly cold, but it will quickly warm up as it makes contact with your skin.
  • Using the transducer, the technician will gently move it back and forth over the area where your carotid artery is located. This procedure should not cause discomfort. If you experience any discomfort or have concerns, it's important to communicate with the technician.

Importance:

  • The Carotid Artery Test is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing the health of the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain. It helps in the early identification of plaque buildup, a condition that can significantly increase the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
  • Early detection is essential because, as indicated in the provided quote from the American Heart Association, many cases of stroke and cardiovascular disease are preventable with timely intervention and lifestyle modifications.
